Let’s practice our Green Deen on #WorldEnvironmentDay!

Enough theory – it’s time to get practical! Caring for the environment is a fundamental Islamic principle. How can we incorporate greener practices into our daily lives? The “Green Up My Community!” campaign focuses on these 5 key areas:

 GREEN DEEN:

Increase community awareness of environmental issues and Islamic responsibilities. This can be anything from picking up litter and appreciating nature, to creating mosque gardens or delivering sermons on recycling.

SAVE ENERGY:

Wasting energy is costly and harmful to the environment. Simple actions like turning off lights when prayer rooms are not in use can reduce energy waste and lower electricity bills.

CONSERVE WATER:

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught us not to waste water. Small changes, like not leaving the tap running during wudu’, can significantly impact water conservation.

EAT OF THE GOOD THINGS:

God advises us to “Eat and drink the sustenance God has provided and do not cause corruption in the land” (Qur’an 2:60). Reduce food waste by carefully planning meals and using Fairtrade and locally sourced ingredients.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE:

Combat the consumer culture by buying less. Reuse glass bottles, recycle clothes, and compost food waste. Mosques can host recycling bins and second-hand clothing collections.
