Our History

Kashmir Development Foundation (KDF) traces its origins back to the aftermath of the Kargil conflict in 1999, a time of profound turmoil for communities along the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). In response to the pressing needs of the internally displaced and conflict-affected populations, KDF emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience. Initially fueled by the dedication of a small group of volunteers in 2000, KDF embarked on a mission to transform the lives of the suffering and marginalised communities within the region.

Driven by its vision of an open, peaceful, and prosperous society, KDF quickly garnered global support, attracting volunteers from diverse backgrounds and establishing itself as a premier catalyst for poverty reduction and community development across Azad Jammu Kashmir and Pakistan.

KDF’s deep-rooted understanding of the local landscape and community dynamics proved invaluable during the devastating earthquake on October 8, 2005. Positioned as one of the foremost responders, KDF leveraged its established community networks to expedite rescue efforts, significantly mitigating the hardships faced by the victims. The organisation collaborated extensively with national and international entities, enhancing the effectiveness of rescue and rehabilitation operations.

Through strategic partnerships with organisations such as the Healing Hands (North), Kashmir Charitable Trust (KCT) in the U.K. and the Kashmir Youth Project (KYP) in Rochdale, U.K., as well as the support of numerous individual and group donors, KDF facilitated the distribution of critical emergency shelter materials across affected districts, providing immediate relief to thousands of families.

In the subsequent rehabilitation phase, KDF’s contributions were marked by the reconstruction of seven community schools and science laboratories within the Muzaffarabad area, significantly bolstering local educational infrastructure and paving the way for long-term resilience and prosperity.

Today, KDF continues its mission with renewed vigour, actively engaged in projects spanning climate action, peacebuilding, education, health, women’s empowerment, youth development, and poverty alleviation. The organisation also offers consultancy and training services to the public and private sectors, further amplifying its impact and promoting sustainable development practices.

Over the years, KDF has touched the lives of thousands of underprivileged communities through multifaceted initiatives, including free ambulance service, medical camps, and awareness campaigns focused on human rights, women’s rights, climate change, peacebuilding, culture, and heritage. Committed to enhancing societal well-being, particularly for the most vulnerable, KDF remains steadfast in fostering a brighter, more equitable future for the region.

Through collaborative partnerships and sustained community engagement, KDF drives positive change, inspiring hope and resilience in communities across Azad Jammu Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and beyond.

2006 – The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Raja Zulqurnain Khan, awarded the Community Services award to Kashmir Development Foundation in recognition of KDF’s role in emergency response and rehabilitation of people affected by the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake. KDF Project’s Coordinator Khalid Hussain Khalid received the Award from the President of AJK.
